Sir John Tennial was a British illustrator and artist during Victorian times.

He is probably best remembered for his illustrations in Lewis Carroll's series, Alice in Wonderland.

John brought the characters to life with his distinctive style.

He was born in London on this day in 1820 and Google reports that he started with oil painting before he became a political cartoonist.

In 1864 he was asked to illustrate the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland series and thus began a succesful career.

Google has celebrated his career today by marking his 200th birthday with an Alice in Wonderland Google Doodle.

In a Google Q&A the creator of the Doodle said: "I hope people are inspired to be as imaginative as Tenniel was with his work.

"Go fall down a rabbit hole!"
