Sir Ian McKellen tickets: How to get tickets for the actor’s extra London 80th birthday tour dates

Sir Ian McKellen's 80th birthday tour is in full swing — and now he's announced he's extending it with a run in the West End.

He has been touring the country since January, treating audiences to anecdotes and snippets of his career highlights.

His fee and all the profits will be donated to each theatre’s charitable projects or restoration funds. The tour has raised more than £2 million so far and is expected to reach £3 million by the end of the run, spanning venues from Orkney to Aberystwyth.

Here’s everything you need to know about the London shows.

What are Ian McKellen’s 2019 London dates?

September 15 — National Theatre's Olivier

September 20-January 5 — Harold Pinter Theatre

What’s in the show?

It’ll be a mix of acting and anecdotes, with some Shakespeare and Tolkien, as well as a bit of gay poetry and memories of the battle to change laws around homosexuality. He will share stories from playing some of his most iconic roles including Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and Magneto in the X Men films. McKellen has also hinted than he might be joined by acting friends should they turn up on the night. He told the Standard: “It’s not a farewell tour. It’s more like ‘Oh, hello again!’” Audience members will also get the chance to act with him on stage.
