Sir Ian McKellen on stage: Legendary actor adds extra West End tour dates to his 80th Birthday UK shows

Sir Ian McKellen is rounding off his 80th birthday tour with an extended run of shows in the West End.

The award-winning actor will bring his one-man show to the Harold Pinter Theatre for 80 performances, marking the grand finale of of a national tour that sees him visit 80 different venues around the UK.

Tolkien, Shakespeare, Others and You opens in September with a mix of anecdotes and acting of his most iconic roles, including Gandalf and King Lear. It will also contain excerpts of gay poetry and memories of the battle to change laws around homosexuality .

His fee and all the profits will be donated to each theatre’s charitable projects or restoration funds. The tour has so far raised more than £2 million and is expected to reach £3 million by the end of the run, spanning venues from Orkney to Aberystwyth.

Sir Ian said: “Taking this new show to 80+ theatres around the country has been a joyful birthday present to myself. I’ve played mainly in theatres I knew well as a young theatregoer and actor. On my birthday, I was in Bolton Town Hall where my dad used to work.”

Tickets are on sale now here. There will also be 80 tickets for £10 available at each performance.
