Sir Ian McKellen, 81, has said he feels “euphoric” after being vaccinated against coronavirus in the first round of jabs.
The actor was snapped having his first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine on Wednesday.
The pensioner, who falls into the very first eligible groups for the Covid-19 vaccine, joined the thousands of over 80s, NHS staff and care home staff being injected.
The Lord Of the Rings star praised the NHS saying he wants to "give them all a big hug" after having his jab.
He said: "Next time I come, well no, six days after I next come I'm going to give them all a big hug - is that allowed? I don't know."
After getting the vaccine at the Arts Research Centre, Queen Mary University Hospital, Sir Ian said: “It’s a very special day, I feel euphoric.
“Anyone who has lived as long as I have is alive because they have had previous vaccinations, the take up amongst the older generation will be 100% - it ought to be – because you’re having it not just for yourself but for people who you are close to – you’re doing your bit for society.
“Of course, it’s painless… it’s convenient, and getting in touch and meeting NHS staff and saying thank you to them for how hard they’ve been working is a bonus.”
He also urged others to get the Covid-19 jab if they could.
“I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. I feel very lucky to have had the vaccine.”
Sir Ian joins the growing list of stars – including Prue Leith, Marty Wilde and Michael Whitehall – who have been called upon by the NHS to receive the vaccine.
Those receiving the Pfizer vaccine will be given a booster jab 21 days after their first dose to ensure the best chance of being protected against the virus.
