Sir Hugh Robertson to lead World Rugby governance review, says re-elected Beaumont

Newly re-elected World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont has announced a "wide-ranging" independent governance review of the organisation to be led by Sir Hugh Robertson.

On Saturday, former England captain Beaumont secured another four-year term in the top job at rugby union's global governing body after winning a 28-23 majority against former vice-chair Agustin Pichot.

After the result was confirmed, Beaumont - whose new deputy is French Rugby president Bernard Laporte - said World Rugby needed to "lead, be transparent, accountable and continue to serve for all" while having a mandate to implement "progressive, sustainable change" as they look to guide the sport through the current Covid-19 crisis.

Less than 24 hours later, the 68-year-old confirmed a forthcoming governance review that will be spearheaded by former Conservative minister Robertson, who is the current chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA).

"I am fully committed to undertaking a wide-changing governance review and I am quite happy to announce that Sir Hugh Robertson will chair that governance committee," Beaumont said during a virtual press conference.

Beaumont also pledged to revisit plans for an annual global international competition, which were dropped last year and heavily backed by Pichot.

Beaumont said: "We will also be looking at the global season, maybe looking again at a variation of the Nations Championship, that was one of the big regrets that I wasn't able to put away. But we have learned from that experience.

"Out of that, we need to take more heed of the players. I am committed to getting the players involved in any decision that we make."

Beaumont's re-election will be officially ratified by the World Rugby Council on May 12.
