Sir Gino dies after battle with serious infection, confirms trainer Nicky Henderson

  • Nicky Henderson has announced the death of his top-class racehorse, Sir Gino, after he failed to recover from a serious infection.
  • The six-year-old had fractured his pelvis at Cheltenham in January, and despite the fracture healing, the deep-seated infection spread too far.
  • Sir Gino had previously overcome a similar infection last year, returning to win the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park on Boxing Day.
  • Henderson described Sir Gino as brilliant and kind, stating his death leaves a significant void at Seven Barrows and is a sad day for owners Joe and Marie Donnelly.
  • The horse was unbeaten in his seven completed starts, which included three Grade One hurdles and a Grade Two chase, with Henderson considering him among the best horses he has trained.
