Sir Elton John has denied Prince Harry and Meghan told him about their plans to step back from senior royal responsibilities before they told the Queen.

Responding to the claim in the Sunday Mirror, a spokesman for Sir Elton said Harry and Meghan's announcement came as a surprise to the singer-songwriter.

He said he only heard of the details and timing of the couple's plans when they posted on their Instagram account.

He added: "Elton supports the fact that Harry and Meghan are admirably taking control of their own lives.

"He cares about them both and their family deeply and is fully supportive of any decisions the couple make, knowing they are made by them alone, without outside influence and with their future happiness and wellbeing in mind."

Sir Elton performed for 600 guests attending a lunchtime reception after Harry and Meghan's wedding.

He also rewrote Candle in the Wind for the funeral of Harry’s mother, Diana, in 1997.

It comes with the Queen set to host crisis talks with the Duke of Sussex and senior royals on Monday in a bid to find a solution to the royal couple's future roles following their decision to step back from duties.

The Queen will be joined by Harry, William and the Prince of Wales at her private Norfolk estate of Sandringham for the crunch meeting where the "next steps" will be decided.

It will be the first time the four will have met since the issue engulfed the royal family, and it is thought Charles will be travelling from Birkhall in Scotland, William from his Kensington Palace apartment and Harry from Frogmore Cottage near Windsor Castle.

Before them will be a range of options, and it is likely the royals will try to come to some agreement before the meeting ends to stop the immediate crisis causing lasting damage to the monarchy.
