Sir David Jason backs The Darling Buds of May remake, slams "vulgar" TV shows

Legendary television star Sir David Jason has backed The Darling Buds of May being remade, as an alternative to “vulgar” TV shows.

The 79-year-old actor, best known as Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, played Pop Larkin in the rural comedy drama and was known for his catchphrase “Perfick”.

ITV is reportedly rebooting the comedy, which was set in the 1950s, also starred Catherine Zeta-Jones and ran for three series from 1991 to 1993.

Sir David was speaking at the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Luzia at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where his daughter Sophie, 18, joined him.

He said: “We need more of that style to balance the shows we’ve got.

“We’ve got a lot of hard-hitting and rude, vulgar shows. You get an awful lot of that and, like a lot of people, I’m, ‘how can I sit there with my mother-in-law and my daughter?’ We switch it over.”

He said he would love to do a cameo in any new version, which is expected to be written by Simon Nye, of The Durrells.

Sir David Jason recently joined a Mirror campaign to end trophy hunting, joining other celebrities such as Liam Gallagher, Peter Shilton, David Gower, Bill Bailey, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

He said: “I cannot understand what pleasure someone can get from killing an animal for kicks.

“It seems we are condemning wildlife to not just a cruel death but also to senseless extinction."

He added: “We should do everything we can to persuade the Government to act swiftly.”
