Sir David Attenborough's firm makes £1million profit from Blue Planet series

Sir David Attenborough’s personal firm made £1million profit from the Blue Planet series which inspired a war on plastic waste.

New accounts reveal David Attenborough (Productions) Limited raked in £1,035,634 in 12 months.

And the bumper figure came on top of a profit of £943,055 the year before.

The company’s shareholders are 93-year-old national treasure Sir David, his son Robert and daughter Susan.

Sir David, who supports many wildlife and environmental charities including WWF, World Land Trust and Cool Earth, owns 54% of the firm.

Details of its success have just been published by Companies House, revealing it had assets of £2.5million but owed £500,000 to creditors.

The series was a massive hit for the BBC, winning a BAFTA and National TV Award – but the shocking light it threw on ocean pollution inspired millions of Brits to think more about plastic waste.

The reaction has been described as the Blue Planet effect, with Environment Secretary Michael Gove saying he was “haunted” by images of the damage done to the sea.

Universities saw an increase in applications for marine biology courses after the series was broadcast.

And it was even reported that the Queen’s decision to ban plastic bottles and straws from royal estates was in part a response to Blue Planet, with Buckingham Palace saying there was a “strong desire to tackle the issue”.
