Sir Billy Connolly admits medical challenges are 'getting worse' as he reflects on Glasgow past

Legendary Glaswegian comedian Billy Connolly has said that the medical challenges he faces whilst filming for television are "getting worse" - and at times, he doesn't enjoy looking back on the past.

Despite some wonderful times, Billy remained positive and also reflected on one "lovely" moment when a Glasgow man walked up to him half-drunk and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Speaking to the BBC about whether filming TV presented any "new challenges" for him at this stage in his life, Billy said: "Not really but the way I think, everything's a new challenge.

"I hardly prepare so I turn up unprepared and everything's a challenge. It's good. It keeps your eyes open. It's good fun."

When asked about any physical obstacles, the Big Yin said that lately his challenges have been medical and admitted "they're getting worse."

The Scottish legend then asked the interviewer if she had noticed that he was holding his left hand throughout the interview and explained: "It's started to jump around. So I'll have to weigh it up and see how bad it gets. I don't know - play it by ear.

"It happens when I least expect it. I'll be talking to you and I think, oh my hand is shaking and I'll grab it.

"But it's not much of a problem."

During the interview, Billy was also asked how he was - after all we all want to make sure the Big Yin is doing okay.

In response to concerns about him, Sir Billy laughed and said: "On the last tour I used to say to the audience 'good evening symptom spotters'. I would show them the symptoms and it would work really well."

Discussing the two-part special called 'Billy Connolly: Made in Scotland' which aired again recently on the BBC (which is described as a 'love letter' to his homeland) Sir Billy described looking back at his life as quite a "scary thought."

The 79-year old said: "I don't like visiting the past It depresses me terribly because some of it is pretty dark. But other times it's wonderful.

"I remember filming in Gallowgate - it's a street in Glasgow. I was looking at one of my paintings on the wall where people have painted me and in the middle of it a guy goes 'oh Billy boy' and he was half-drunk and he came up and gave me a cuddle, kissed me on the cheek and started to talk to me.

"He knew damn fine I was filming but he didn't care. It was lovely."

'Billy Connolly: Made in Scotland' is now available to watch on the BBC iPlayer here.
