Sir Anthony Hopkins, 83, reveals the heartwarming reason he joined TikTok

Sir Anthony Hopkins has discussed the heartwarming reason he's joined TikTok and revealed he was asleep when he won the best actor Oscar for his role in The Father.

The Port Talbot-born double Academy Award winner joined ITV's Lorraine to discuss the movie ahead of its cinematic release on Friday, June 11.

Anthony became the oldest ever winner of the best actor Oscar for his role in the movie, for which he played an ageing man struggling with memory loss.

However, the Welsh acting legend explained he was asleep when he found out the major news after not expecting to win the award.

"You were asleep I believe when you were announced as the winner," Lorraine said to the star.

"I wasn't being cynical," he explained. "I didn't expect to get it at all, the main contender was Chadwick Boseman, so I went to bed and my phone went about five in the morning and I couldn't believe it, I really couldn't believe it. It was such a shock."

As he couldn't be there in person, Sir Anthony delivered his acceptance speech from Wales the next morning instead.

Paying tribute to the late actor at the time on Instagram, he said: "Good morning. Here I am in my home land of Wales. At 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn't.

"I am very grateful to the Academy, and I want to say thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman who was taken from us far too early. And once again, thank you all. I really did not expect this. I feel very privileged and honoured. Thank you."

The Silence of the Lambs actor has been spending a lot of time at home in Wales recently, popping into Greggs for a steak bake and posting videos of him singing Welsh tunes from his childhood with old friends.

He's also joined TikTok, sharing videos of himself dancing, playing the piano and painting.

"It keeps me out of trouble," he joked to Lorraine.

Adding: "I love painting, music, piano and composition and all that.

"There's been so much grief and tragedy in the world I thought well I'd make the best of it and just try to entertain people with a bit of TikTok.

"And keep people's spirits up a bit because we can all descend into gloom for very good reason but we must keep going."

Sir Anthony also said he has no plans to slow down anytime soon when asked about retirement.

"I want to keep going on I do it for love and fun," he told the presenter.

Lorraine continues weekdays at 9am on ITV.
