Sir Alex Ferguson would have simple method to deal with Romelu Lukaku

Gary Neville says Sir Alex Ferguson would have simple method to deal with Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku scored on his second Chelsea debut as the Blues beat Arsenal 2-0, dominating the home defence with his intelligence and physical superiority, having re-signed from Inter Milan less than two weeks ago.

Mikel Arteta and co could not handle Thomas Tuchel's £97.5million man but Neville believes his ex-manager would have had a plan to handle the striker if his old side faced him.

The former Manchester United captain was discussing Lukaku's statement performance with Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football and was asked what legendary boss Ferguson would have done before facing a striker of his mould.

"Arsenal were thinking about Arsenal’s No.10s - of course they’re a threat, [Mason] Mount and [Kai] Havertz - but you’ve got to deal with the priority. The priority is Lukaku," explained Neville.

"Sir Alex in his team talks would attend to the danger.

"And you can argue that when you’re playing against a good team, there are lots of dangers, but if you’re playing against Arsenal - Pires, Henry, Cole.

"Now that’s not saying that Ray Parlour might do something on that right-hand side. But attend to this [Lukaku] and you’ve got a great chance of winning the match," stated the ex-United right-back.

"Arsenal didn’t attend to Lukaku. Mount and Havertz could hurt you, but Lukaku will finish you off. He absolutely destroyed them."

Carragher also took issue with the Gunners's defensive display, noting how he expects Liverpool to set up against Chelsea next weekend.

"The best way to describe Arsenal is they tried to play like Man City or Liverpool would do but they haven’t got the players," he said.

"Liverpool won’t change for Chelsea but Van Dijk is the one player, certainly in the Premier League, who will fancy his chances up against Lukaku."

Saturday's evening kick-off will see two potential title challengers and two German managers clash at Stamford Bridge.

Carragher believes the Belgian will be a threat but it was poor defending from his second debut opponents that allowed him to look so dangerous.

"It’s going to be a great battle but Liverpool, I have no doubt, will be looking to push up to the halfway line," stated the Reds legend.

"What we saw yesterday from Lukaku doesn’t mean he’s going to do that to every defender. It was bad organisation.

"He’s a handful, he’s a top striker and he will score lots of goals but a lot of that was caused by Arsenal."

Tuchel was pleased by his display and his overall introduction, saying post-match: "I’m very happy with how he has integrated already.

"He is a very smart guy. He is a very democratic leader, talks to everybody as a leader and is very humble and competitive."

The German added: "I wanted to be open to watch him to see his strengths and capability to adapt and link up with Havertz and Mount.

"The guys like to play with each other."
