Sir Alex Ferguson trolled by Rio Ferdinand after Scotland defeat at Euro 2020

Rio Ferdinand trolled Sir Alex Ferguson after Scotland's Euro 2020 defeat - as he revealed his old boss reckons England will suffer defeat on Friday.

Scotland are likely to need at least a point from their Wembley clash with Gareth Southgate's side after they were beaten 2-0 by the Czech Republic on Monday.

And Manchester United legend Ferdinand couldn't resist teasing his former gaffer as the Scots' first major finals appearance in 23 years failed to go to plan, with Patrik Schick scoring twice for the Czechs.

Ferdinand was analysing England's win over Croatia on his Vibe with Five channel while the Scotland match was taking place - and he was quick to message Ferguson when Schick's first goal went in.

"Can I just say something: Scotland are getting beaten 1-0!" the former defender said.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has been on my phone all morning. Let me see if I can text him back right now. I’m gonna text him now: 'Are you okay boss?'"

He then said the Scot had predicted his country would get the better of England in Friday's clash.

‘He thinks they are going to beat us," said Ferdinand. "He thinks they’re going to overrun England. They’ve got to get past this first game before that!"

Ferdinand then turned his attention to former United team-mate Darren Fletcher, saying: "Who’s the other one I’ve got on my phone who’s been blowing it up? Darren Fletcher. 'Fletch, you alright?'"

Schick opened the scoring at Hampden Park from a header before scored a sensational goal after the break - lobbing Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall with an audacious effort from near the halfway line.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward admitted afterwards he had made a mental note of Marshall's high positioning earlier in the game and planned his long shot.

But Scotland boss Steve Clarke refused to criticise Marshall, saying: “Well if he’d been on his line he would have caught it. But in normal circumstances he’s looking to sweep up behind the defence.

“But it was a fantastic finish. I think rather than looking to apportion blame all the time sometimes you’ve got to credit the goal scorer."

He added: “Losing a goal five minutes before half-time - from the second phase of a set play - was disappointing for us.

“We normally defend that quite well so that was a blow."

Despite the defeat, Clarke insisted his side were confident ahead of the England clash.

“It’s disappointing but we are ready for the next one," he said.

“Sometimes a football match doesn’t go your way. I don’t think there was much between the two sides if you look at our attempts at goal.

“We just weren’t quite clinical enough at the right time but the game on Friday will take care of itself.”
