Sir Alex Ferguson's theory on guards of honour ahead of Man City vs Liverpool

Sir Alex Ferguson "enjoyed" Manchester United giving Chelsea a guard of honour in 2005 - because he wanted his team to feel the pain of losing out in the Premier League title race.

The legendary Scot guided the Red Devils to eight top-flight crowns ahead of the 2004/05 season, with Arsene Wenger's Arsenal providing much of the competition at the top of the table.

But then Chelsea, armed with Roman Abramovich's millions and under the leadership of Mourinho, arrived as leading contenders and ultimately eased to a first Premier League title crown.

And their first away game after clinching the title at Bolton's Rebook Stadium was a tasty trip to Old Trafford.

As is tradition in England, United were ultimately forced to give the title-winning Blues a guard of honour; a stance that Ferguson was all for according to Phil Neville.

"I remember at Old Trafford we had to do a guard of honour on our own patch for Chelsea and it was almost like Sir Alex enjoyed it," Neville told Premier League Productions.

"It was like 'This is going to hurt you this, seeing a team that has got your title come out at your stadium and you have to applaud them'".

Last week, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Manchester City will give new Premier League champions Liverpool a guard of honour.

The newly-crowned kings of England will travel to the Etihad to face their rivals on Thursday night.

Guardiola believes Jurgen Klopp's men must be given the acclaim they deserve for ending his team's dominance.

And his players will salute the Reds in the traditional manner when they travel to the Etihad.

Guardiola said: "We are going to do the guard of honour, of course. We will always receive Liverpool in an incredible way when they come to our house.

"So of course we are going to do this, because they deserve it."
