Sir Alex Ferguson proved right about Scott McTominay after advice to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay stole the headlines over the weekend as he scored twice in his side's 6-2 rout of Leeds United.

The Scotland international, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, scored twice in the opening three minutes of the Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The 24-year-old was the preferred option in central midfield by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Paul Pogba among those left on the subs' bench.

McTominay has played 18 games in league and cup under Solskjaer this term and is slowly becoming an important member of the side - ahead of some of the more high-profile players at United.

The midfielder has not always been a first choice since he broke into the first team at the end of the 2016/17 campaign but he has made 101 appearance across all competitions for the Red Devils.

One Scot who will be particularly proud of his efforts is legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former boss at Old Trafford had a brief exchange with then United manager Jose Mourinho back in 2018 about the player.

In an event remembering the families and victims of the Munich air disaster, Ferguson was seen having a quick word with his fellow countryman before speaking with Mourinho.

And as reported by the Daily Star at the time, Ferguson appeared to tell the 'Special One' to pick Tominay in United's teams for the rest of the season.

At the time, £89m man Pogba had been axed from the team with McTominay replacing him in the centre of the pitch.

The same scenario has now played itself out with McTominay impressing when given an opportunity and Pogba left to watch on from afar.

The French World Cup winner won't be happy sitting on the bench week after week and it remains to be seen where his future lies with the January transfer window around the corner.
