Sir Alex Ferguson names the one Newcastle United player he still regrets not signing

Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up on the one player he regrets not landing during his glittering managerial career.

It's not Alan Shearer, who turned down Man United twice during his playing days, but it is a Gallowgate End favourite in the one and only Paul Gascoigne.

Gazza opted for Tottenham Hotspur in 1988 when a £2.2million move saw him link up with Terry Venables at Tottenham Hotspur rather than a move to the North-West.

The Geordie star once said he did not want to insult Newcastle fans by choosing Man United, as they were a northern club, and was eager to head for the bright lights of London.

When asked by UTD Podcast, Ferguson revealed the player he was most rueful of not getting and said: "In reality, you have to say, the only one that always comes to my mind and that's Paul Gascoigne.

"He was absolutely fantastic.

"I think if we'd have got him, he would have had a great career, I really do.

"I'm not saying he didn't have a good career but he would have had a better career with us.

"We had Geordies in our squad like Robson, Bruce plus Bobby Charlton.

"Sir Bobby would have been a fantastic mentor to him because he's such a fantastic man and even Gary Pallister, although he was from Middlesbrough and I know they don't count that as a Geordie, as someone who understands the culture like Gary would. He promised to sign for us and I went on holiday."

And talking about the moment he learned he'd decided to go to Spurs from Newcastle, Ferguson said: "I got a phone-call from the front desk from Martin Edwards saying he'd signed for Tottenham.

"He signed for Tottenham because they bought his mother a house for £80,000 and, dearie me, I couldn't believe it, you know. He was a fantastic player."
