Sir Alex Ferguson named five Man Utd stars you can't drop - hints at Erik ten Hag mistake

Sir Alex Ferguson managed some true world-beaters during his time as Manchester United boss.

As a result, naming a best XI has always been something the Scot has struggled to do, regardless of how many times he's been asked. There are some obvious names that simply have to be included, but whittling it down to just eleven will always split opinion.

In his 2013 autobiography, Ferguson explained: "You couldn't leave out [Paul] Scholes and you couldn't leave out Bryan Robson. They would both give you at least ten goals a season. But then that raises the question: How can you leave out [Roy] Keane?

"You would have to play the three of them. But if you do that, who do you play with [Eric] Cantona, who was always better playing with another forward?

"Try picking one striker from [Brian] McClair, [Mark] Hughes, [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer, [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, [Teddy] Sheringham, [Dwight] Yorke, [Andy] Cole, [Wayne] Rooney and [Robin] van Persie. You couldn't disregard [Ryan] Giggs."

Concluding that the task is near-impossible, Ferguson did strike something of a compromise by naming five individuals that, in his eyes, could never be left out of a United XI.

He wrote: "So it always felt like an impossible task to select a best XI, yet you would have to say Cantona, Giggs, Scholes, Robson and Cristiano Ronaldo could never be left out of a Man United side."

Of course, the careers of Cantona, Giggs, Scholes and Robson have all now passed. But Ronaldo is still very much active at Man United and heading into what may well be his final year at the club.

Ronaldo's summer has been tumultuous to say the least after the Portugal international announced he wants to leave for a club competing in the Champions League this season.

The 37-year-old hasn't got his own way, and now reports claim Erik ten Hag is looking to leave Ronaldo out of his starting XI when the new season kicks off this weekend - a clear mistake in the eyes of Ferguson.

According to The Sun, Ronaldo is set to start the campaign on the bench while he gets up to speed, having missed United's pre-season tour, with Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford leading the line for the Red Devils.
