Sir Alex Ferguson makes Billy Gilmour statement to excite Chelsea and Scotland fans

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has made quite the impression since making his Blues debut.

The 19-year-old broke through at first team level under Frank Lampard, featuring in pre-season after the Chelsea legend took charge, before then playing in the UEFA Super Cup against Liverpool and making his Premier League bow in August 2019.

In total, he played 11 times for Chelsea's first team last season, with man of the match displays against Liverpool in the FA Cup and Everton in the Premier League.

He has been hampered by injuries this season, but has still featured eight times this campaign, with his most recent appearance coming in March against Sheffield United.

He has only played twice since Thomas Tuchel took charge in January, but he has been tipped by many for a bright future in the game, both for club and country, with Gilmour impressing through the age groups with Scotland.

And former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that Gilmour is one of several promising young Scottish players coming through at the moment ahead of the European Championships this summer.

"He's another young kid who is emerging," he said, speaking to the official You Tube channel of the Scotland national team ahead of the summer tournament.

"I saw him play for Chelsea in one of the games towards the start of the season, and he did really well.

"He got an injury that held him back a bit, but he is an emerging player there is no doubt about that, and that is good to see young players like him coming through and the quality of players in England. We are blessed with some good young players coming through."

Gilmour, who joined Chelsea from Rangers in July 2017, is yet to make his senior international debut, but he has featured 13 times at U21 level and is expected to challenge for a place in Steve Clarke's Tartan Army squad sooner rather than later.

And with Scotland having qualified for their first major tournament since 1998, Gilmour will be hoping to stake his claim for a place in the squad in the final stages of the 2020/21 campaign with Chelsea.
