Big-hearted Sir Alex Ferguson has helped raise £405,000 for the NHS after its staff saved his life last year.

The managerial legend helped organise a star-studded charity dinner at a Manchester hotel on Friday night.

Top prize was lunch with Sir Alex and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp , and a guest paid a staggering £100,000 for the privilege.

Former Manchester United, Aberdeen and Scotland boss Sir Alex also arranged a meet and greet with The Proclaimers for a £5000 donation, with all the money going to the health service.

Sir Alex, 77, suffered a brain haemorrhage in May last year and was treated at the Macclesfield, Salford Royal and Alexandra hospitals.

A source at the dinner, hosted by actor James Nesbitt, said: “Alex was in great form all night and
had his guests in stitches with his stories.

“It raised a lot of money and Alex was determined that all of it should go to the NHS. He’s always been a great supporter and that’s become even more the case since his health issues
last year.”
