Sir Alex Ferguson felt Leeds United were on the right track with Daniel James bid

Former Leeds United target Daniel James is close to joining Manchester United from Swansea City and it has been reported Sir Alex Ferguson has provided his verdict on the imminent transfer.

The Whites almost landed the 21-year-old during the January transfer window only for Swansea to pull out of the deal and leave the Whites frustrated.

Marcelo Bielsa's men were close to his capture, but now his value has ballooned and Man Utd are on the verge of agreeing a deal for around £15m, according to reports.

James certainly has the potential to be a star in the Premier League and Football Insider are reporting Ferguson has told United sources privately he loves the Welsh international.

“Sir Alex is a massive admirer of Dan James and convinced he is destined for big things," a United source told Football Insider . “He would never say that publicly and put too much pressure on him but he has been impressed by the kid.

“He doesn’t get too involved in our recruitment, but he’s certainly excited by the signing of Dan James.”

James will go down as the one who got away for Leeds it seems, with Bielsa and the club very close to signing him in January. The winger had agreed a move to Elland Road in the previous window and also had passed a medical.

Disagreements among the Swansea hierarchy led to the deal falling through.
