Sir Alex Ferguson cannot hide his delight after Man Utd beat Man City

Sir Alex Ferguson could not hide his delight as Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay struck in added time to seal a 2-0 Old Trafford win over Manchester City .

United completed a Premier League double over neighbours City for the first time since the 2009/10 season, following their 2-1 victory over Pep Guardiola's side at the Etihad in December.

It means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the first United boss since Ferguson to mastermind two league wins over City in a single season.

It was legendary Red Devils boss Ferguson who coined the nickname 'noisy neighbours' for City after their takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

And Fergie was all smiles in the stands as McTominay pounced on a poor throw by City keeper Ederson to rifle home and seal victory.

The Scottish midfielder's goal doubled the score after Anthony Martial had given United a first-half lead.

United's victory extend their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions, and moved them back up to fifth in the Premier League, keeping them within three points of fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot.

Ironically, United are now in pole position to benefit from their neighbours' two-year suspension from European football - as fifth place will earn a Champions League spot unless City are successful in having their ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

McTominay described his goal as "a sweet moment", and urged his teammates to keep up the momentum in their quest for Champions League football.

The midfielder said: "That was such a sweet moment.

"It's such a beautiful feeling to score like that in front of the fans.

"We'll take confidence from that but, in the coming weeks, we've got to keep the run going.

“But we can’t get too carried away and we need to keep pushing for the Champions League."
