Sir Alex Ferguson believes Liverpool will end their 29-year wait for a league title this season.

The Scot famously knocked the Reds of their perch, transforming Manchester United into English football’s dominant force at the expense of their arch-rivals.

United however are in a fight to secure a top four finish this season while Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League, battling Manchester City in a title race that looks set to go right to the wire.

And Ferguson believes Liverpool’s long wait for a title will end in May – believing City’s hopes will be dealt an almighty blow by his former club in this month’s Manchester derby.

That’s according to former Burnley forward Jonathan Walters, who was tipped off by old teammate and former United youngster Phil Bardsley who was with Ferguson during the week.

Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 LIVE’s Football Daily podcast, Walters said: “I was chatting with Phil Bardsley and I’m going to drop a name here, he was sat with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He sat with him and he thinks Liverpool are going to win it.”

“He thinks Liverpool because he thinks United will get something out of the City game.”

Liverpool currently lead City by two points having played a game more than Pep Guardiola’s side.

That game in hand however is a trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday April 24.
