Sinn Fein TD Jonathan O'Brien calls for shake-up in the FAI

A former Cork City chairman and founding member of FORAS has called on John Delaney and the FAI board to resign immediately.

Jonathan O’Brien is a Sinn Fein TD and was one of the politicians to grill the FAI delegation at Wednesday’s Oireachtas Committee hearing.

O’Brien said: “The board needs to step aside and there needs to be a complete shake-up. If there isn’t it’s very hard to restore confidence in the fAI.

“I don’t (have confidence in the board), as someone who is really passionate about the League of Ireland.

“I heard Fran Gavin say on Wednesday they had made huge improvements since they took over.

“I couldn’t disagree that there have not been improvements under the stewardship of the FAI.

“But the vast majority of the improvements from League of Ireland clubs is down to the volunteers themselves.

“People who work in the off-season, cutting grass, washing gear, cleaning stands – they’re the real champions of domestic football, not the FAI.”

O’Brien continued: “The FAI has lost the confidence of the ordinary general support – people who attend League of Ireland week in, week out.

“They have to go in the best interests of the league, in the best interests of Irish football.

“If they’re as genuinely passionate about Irish football as they claim to be, then they would make the right decision and they would step aside.”
