Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty tells of ex-Donegal star Kevin Cassidy's amazing gesture for his late father

Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty has heaped praise on Kevin Cassidy for a brilliant gesture the ex-Donegal star made to his late father.

Cassidy appeared on TG4's Laochra Gael last night and the show proved a hit with GAA fans.

In the programme, it was revealed that Cassidy's Ulster Championship medal went with Doherty's father - a fellow Gweedore man - to his grave.

And posting on Facebook yesterday, the Donegal Sinn Fein TD said: "The night before we buried my father, Kevin Cassidy told me that he played football not for medals or trophies but for people like my father who enjoyed the game so much.

"Tonight he reveals in LaochraGael that his 2011 Ulster title medal, the only intercounty provincial title he'd win, went with my father to his grave.

"Our family will always appreciate that amazing gesture. #laochragael anocht TG4 9.30 Tonight."

Fans were loving the insight from the Gaoth Dobhair star last night as he looked back on his Gaelic football career.

Cassidy reflected on growing up in Scotland and Donegal as well as his early career with his county.

But the main talking point was his infamous fallout with Jim McGuinness ahead of the 2012 season, with Donegal going on to win the All-Ireland that year.

Posting on social media, one fan said: "This Laochra Gael is compelling viewing now - Kevin Cassidy a ferocious competitor, Jimmy McGuinness the ultimate pragmatist."

Another added: "Kevin Cassidy one of the best players to put on a Donegal Jersey without a doubt".

"Incredible story from Kevin Cassidy! Great to see he stayed true to himself no matter what".

One added: "This is great viewing on Laochra Gael. Absolutely love Kevin Cassidy's attitude, especially how he dealt with Donegal going on to win the All-Ireland."
