Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty slams insurance bosses over issue of fraudulent claims

A video of Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty laying into insurance industry bosses has gone viral.

The party's finance spokesperson slammed the companies' suggestion that fraudulent claims are the reason insurance premiums are so high.

Mr Doherty called out insurance firms for not reporting suspected bogus claims to gardai - despite one firm believing 20% are fraudulent.

He was speaking last Friday at an Oireachtas committee meeting alongside CEO of AXA Phillip Bradley, Allianz chief Sean McGrath, and FBD Ireland's Jackie McMahon and Fiona Muldoon.

Sinn Fein posted a seven minute video of the meeting on Twitter.

In it, Doherty said: "I'm not suggesting there is no issue with fraudulent claims.

"What I'm suggesting is that the insurance industry is completely exaggerating the issue of fraudulent claims in a way to try and justify the type of premiums they are charging, and the increases we are seeing in certain sectors.

"It is not for the insurance industry to prove whether claims are fraudulent. It is for the industry to report a suspected crime to the gardai.

"We have listened for quite a while in relation to this issue and I know there are issues in terms of fraudulent and exaggerated claims, but not at the scale that the industry is suggesting - and the last 10 minutes have just proven that."

The clip, which been viewed over 430,000 times, received rave reviews on social media.

One person said: "A must watch. Pearse Doherty and Sinn Fein knocking it out of the park.

Another said: "Brilliant. Why has not this been broadcast on every radio and television station in the country?"

A third added: "Finally somebody willing the hold the insurance sector accountable."

A fourth said: "You've been banging this drum for quite some time, insurance companies looking distinctly uncomfortable here."

A fifth added: "That is an example of cross question that all politicians could learn from. Well done Mr Doherty."
