Sinn Fein propose affordable homes at a maximum price of €230,000 in Dublin

Sinn Fein has put forward proposals to build affordable houses for €100,000 less than Fine Gael by cutting out the greedy private developer middlemen.

The policy document from the party’s Eoin O Broin shows how it would provide homes at a maximum cost of €230,000 per unit in Dublin and €220,000 outside the capital.

The policy paper also proposes including an affordable rent scheme in the project where rents would not exceed €700 to €900 a month for a family.

Crucially, Mr O Broin said builders would still get the same profit margin of 5% to 6% under his plan as they get under Fine Gael’s.

He added: “Affordable housing was the single biggest issue in February’s General Election.

“For the last four years, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael failed to deliver a single affordable home to rent or to buy, and to date neither party has published a detailed affordable housing scheme.

“The draft affordable housing circular we are publishing today outlines how local authorities, approved housing bodies and community housing trusts will be able to provide affordable homes to rent and buy.

“It also outlines who would be able to access such homes.”
