Sinn Fein named Ireland's most popular party as Covid restrictions sees Government support plummet

Sinn Fein has hit a record high in the latest IPSOS poll of the nation - with a 15-point lead over Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil as Ireland's most popular political party.

Mary Lou McDonald's party now sit at 35%, a rise of three points since the last poll data in October.

But it's terrible news for Fine Gael, who have seen their support drop to 20%, the same as Fianna Fáil.

The Green Party have also fallen in the poll to 5%, according to data published in this morning's Irish Times.

Satisfaction with the Government has fallen by three points to 43 per cent, with the re-introduction of Covid-19 restrictions a likely factor.

And though 57% of respondents believe the Government is doing a "good job" handling the pandemic, even that total has fallen from 74% in October.

Those who answered the Ipsos poll were also questioned about the potential for future Covid-19 restrictions - and specifically which measures the Government should consider.

The Irish Times say that the poll was conducted among 1,200 adults at 120 sampling points across all constituencies on December 5th-8th.

Meanwhile, the Government has confirmed some changes have been made to the international travel advice as the Omicron variant starts to spread in Ireland.

Just moments before Micheál Martin appeared on The Tonight Show on Thursday night, a Government spokesperson announced new advice pertaining to people who want to enter Ireland from Great Britain.

On Thursday, another 4,022 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed and 530 people were in hospital of which 115 are being treated in ICU.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan said an additional five Omicron cases had been confirmed, bringing to six the total number of cases that have been identified following whole genome sequencing.
