Sinn Fein extend lead as most popular party in Ireland as Fine Gael support plummets

Sinn Fein have extended their lead as Ireland's most popular party to ten points as support for Fine Gael plummeted in a new poll.

The latest Irish Times/IPSOS MRBI survey, published on Wednesday night, shows that Mary Lou McDonald's party commands the support of 32% of prospective voters.

This is up one point - and puts them ten points clear of Fine Gael, who have seen support plummet since the last poll, dropping five points to 22%

Fianna Fáil are unchanged at 20%, with the Greens and Labour both gaining a point each, to 7% and 4%, respectively.

Independents and other parties account for 16% of support.

The breakdown for the smaller parties sees the Social Democrats rise one to 3%, with People Before Profit and Áontú unchanged on 2% and 1%.

In terms of Government satisfaction, it is terrible news for both Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar, with overall support dropping seven points from 53% to 46%.

This could be the result of a number of factors, including the housing crisis and the Katherine Zappone fiasco.

The poll finds that personal support for the Government leaders has fallen too.

Mr Varadkar dropped an astonishing 13 points, from 56% to 43%, with the Taoiseach also falling by eight points to 41%.

Eamon Ryan has dropped one point to 25%, while Sinn Fein leader Ms McDonald rising up to 43%

The Irish Times poll also asks respondents what they thought of Ireland's corporation tax.

As it stands, the rate is set to change in line with the OECD tax agreement to 15%.

It found that 59% of people want the Government to maintain the 12.5% rate which has been a cornerstone of Irish economic policy.

A further 26% believe the Government should join the OECD efforts and 15% didn't know or had no opinion.
