Sinkhole opens up in middle of A40 in Wales, causing it to close in both directions

A sinkhole has caused travel disruption after it led to a major road to be closed in both directions in Wales.

The A40 near Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, was shut for four miles and diversions put in place after the gap opened up in the tarmac.

The sinkhole is said to be outside the Blaenos Nursing Home and is it not yet clear what caused it.

An estimate for the size of the hole has not been released but authorities have confirmed road closure and have not provided an update for when it will reopen.

Traffic has been diverted via the A4069 through Llangadog and engineers are currently at the scene and will investigate the incident.

Carmarthenshire Roads Policing posted images of the sinkhole on Twitter and said: “No it’s not a mole problem, Sink holes have appeared along the A40 on the Llandeilo side just before Llandovery, drivers beware.”
