Sinkhole opens up in Glasgow city centre forcing closure of busy road

A sinkhole has resulted in a Glasgow city centre road being closed for most of the day.

The crater was discovered on North Frederick Street, close to its junction with George Square.

A Glasgow City Council roads inspector has detected running water under the road surface, and the local authority is now working with Scottish Water to establish the source of this and the cause of the fault on the road.

Photographs of the gaping hazard show the surrounding pavement also bucking and the area has been taped off by police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 9.55am on Monday, 18 October, officers were called to a report of a hole in the roadway on George Street at North Frederick Street, Glasgow.

"Officers attended and the road was closed while the relevant agencies deal with this matter."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “Our roads inspector has been at the scene of the fault and has detected running water under the road surface.

“We are now liaising with Scottish Water to establish the source of the running water and the cause of fault on the road.

“We are treating this as a priority but North Frederick St remains closed at this time with one lane also closed to east bound traffic from George Square.

“Drivers are advised to find an alternative route at this time if possible.”

The local authority has not received any reports of injuries or damage to vehicles.

Earlier on Monday, First Bus tweeted that various services - 38, 38A/B/C/E, 57 and 57A - were diverted via North Hanover Street and Cathedral Street.

A First Bus spokesperson said: "North Frederick Street is currently closed to all traffic at its junction with George Square due to a sink hole appearing this looks as if it will be long closure services currently being diverted via north Hanover street and no issues so far."
