Sinkhole closes Failsworth road near to major supermarket

Officials are looking into a mysterious hole in the road that opened up earlier this evening.

A small section of the street on Ashton Road West, in Failsworth, was closed in both directions shortly after 6pm, when the sinkhole was reported to authorities.

The hole, around 30cm wide, has now been placed behind a barrier, so that traffic can pass by easily.

Situated around the Main Street and Partington Street junctions, the hole will be investigated by the authorities, before being repaired.

Traffic in the area is coping well with the disruption, but drivers have been urged to take care if they're travelling in the area.

Transport for Greater Manchester warned drivers to be careful on Twitter.

They said: "Ashton Road West, Failsworth, Road is closed in both directions between Lord Lane and Casson Street due to a sinkhole."

Although traffic has been allowed past, further closures may be necessary to allow for repair work to take place.
