Sinkhole appears outside Glasgow school as police shut down street

Police shut down a street in the north of Glasgow yesterday afternoon in response to a sinkhole appearing on the road.

Emergency services were called to Hawthorn Street in Springburn at 2.50pm after the hazard was spotted outside the main gates of Elmvale Primary School and Nursery.

The school posted a photo of the sinkhole and has warned parents dropping off their kids at school this morning to avoid the area of damage, with Fernbank Street remaining closed as a result.

They Tweeted: "Please allow extra time for your journey to school tomorrow as Fernbank Street is currently closed due to some damage in the road outside the main gate.

"Diversion currently via Memel St & Elmvale St.

"Thanks Police Scotland for your support today with keeping our families safe."

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Glasgow Live this morning: “Officers were called to assist with traffic management around a hole in the roadway on Hawthorn Street, Glasgow, which was reported to police at around 2.50pm on Tuesday, 1 June.

"The council were contacted to attend and local diversions were in place as the matter was looked into."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We have been attending at Fernbank Street following a report of an area of subsidence on the road.

“The fault is being treated as a priority and traffic management measures are currently in place to ensure public safety.

“However, as an inspection of the road fault found that a utility services pipe had become exposed, we have been liaising with the utility provider to ensure there is no damage to their apparatus.

“Once the pipe is properly checked and no further issues are identified, we hope to have fault filled in and the road properly reinstated within the next two days.”
