Sink hole opens up in Newcastle business district

The sink hole in King Street.

City of Newcastle staff have cordoned off a sink hole which emerged in King Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The hole near the kerb on the corner of King and Bolton streets is about 70 centimetres in diameter and 30cm deep.

A council maintenance team is looking into the cause of the subsidence and a night crew was on site overnight completing remedial work.

A neighbour told the Newcastle Herald that the hole had appeared at about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

She said a similar hole had appeared several years earlier one block away, on the corner of Hunter and Bolton streets, in Newcastle's central business district.
