Sinister plot to damage bike tyres as massive nails deliberately left on beauty spot trail

A dog walker was left disgusted after stumbling across blocks of wood with massive nails sticking out of them in a bid to damage vehicle tyres.

Shaun Jones was walking his dog Ralphie on the main trail of the Bwlch Mountain near Treorchy on Tuesday when he came across three blocks of wood with nine inch nails sticking out of them.

They had been buried in the ground with the nail sticking up and left in a zig zag pattern.

While Shaun, of Rhondda, said he believed the intention of the people who planted the nails was to puncture tyres, it could have devastating consequences if they injured a person or an animal.

Outrage at plans to shut village's GP surgery in Neath Port Talbot

He said: "Whilst out walking my dog Ralphie I came across  three identical pieces of wood found all with a single nine inch nail sticking out of them, they were positioned in a zig zag pattern across the main path of the Bwlch Mountain that is often used by cyclists, motorbikes, walkers, horse riders and jeeps.

"The wood was buried with just the nail sticking up in the air in such a way that it must have been put there deliberately to cause damage to motorcycles and Jeeps using the pathway, but whoever had put them there obviously hadn’t thought about how it could injure the wildlife that use the mountains or they just didn’t care.

Council to close all but one of its day centres in Rhondda Cynon Taf

"Earlier in the year I saw a couple of posts about people stringing barbed wire between trees throughout different forestry’s so clearly this is an ongoing issue and something needs to be done to find those responsible before someone gets seriously hurt if not killed.

"Back last year on Cwmparc Mountain whilst out in the Jeeps,  four Jeeps all ended up with punctures and none of us could understand why so we walked back up the mountain and we couldn’t believe what we found as there was an old disc brake from a car with three steel spikes welded to it and buried in the ground, again deliberately put there to cause damage.

"So this isn’t the first time it’s been done and I'd imagine it isn’t going to be the last."

South Wales Police said it was investigating the matter.
