An island in Italy has been dubbed 'the most haunted island' as it is the final resting place of thousands of diseased, murderous and insane people.
The secluded island of Poveglia is a land mass that floats between Venice and Lido. In fact, its dark and derelict forbidding shores are only minutes away from the glamour of the Venice Film Festival on the Lido.
It reportedly holds several hundred years worth of cruelty on its soil, and has a very dark and twisted history.
During the bubonic plague, sick people were shipped off to the island, and people lived there until they died.
And, by the time the next epidemic came along, the barely alive bodies were dumped there and burned in mass graves.
In the 20s, a mental hospital was built on Poveglia to welcome the island's 'newest guests' - anyone who showed symptoms sickness, physical or mental illness.
According to reports, even if a person presented symptoms such an itch, they would be shipped off to the secluded island to be in the company of over 100K diseased ghosts who'd died in the outbreak before them.
During the period of the new pandemic, mad doctors would run the mental hospitals and would conduct brutal experiments on the residents.
Mad tests would include shoving chisels into their brains to see what moved.
Today however, images show the island in a completely different, and much creepier light.
With overgrown and untamed grass, and creepy metal beds strewn all over the place, it adds to the eerie element of the psychiatric ward.
Much of the original furniture remains in the hospital, while the corridors remain bare and empty, and the staircase towards the main hall ruined.
Most recently, paranormal investigator Zak Bagans lead his team of Ghost Hunters to the island.
During their episode on the creepy island of Poveglia, the crew stranded themselves there for 24 hours.
Their adventure is full of perceived curses, weird energy, inexplicable equipment malfunctions, and off-the-charts ghost monitors.
Between mysterious bangs, audible footsteps and disembodied voices, the footage only solidified claims that the island is haunted.
Despite the Ghost Hunters being able to get to the island, there are no boats that make regular stops there.
In fact, the Italian tourism board prohibits visitors on the island - on paper - but keen visitors may apply to visit.
It requires a lengthy application process, where a certain level of clearance must be obtained before stepping foot there.
And, there is also a pretty penny to pay - around 200 euros - since Italians like to keep Poveglia at the bottom of their list of tourist attractions.
But with the right price, travellers are able to hire a boat towards the forbidden shores of the island.
