Single shot fired in gun attack - and it could be case of mistaken identity

A single shot was fired from a handgun in an attack on a house in Bury.

As reported in the Manchester Evening News, a property in Coniston Avenue, Whitefield was targeted at 1am on Tuesday.

Police were only informed of the incident ten hours later.

One line of inquiry is that the attack could have been a case of mistaken identity.

No one was injured - and no arrests have been made.

The street is in a heavily residential area, just off Moss Lane, at the far end of the Victoria Estate.

Police have been making door-to-door enquiries asking for CCTV footage.

It is believed the gunman ran off towards Rydal Grove.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11.10am on Tuesday 25 February 2020, police received a report of an earlier firearms discharge on Coniston Avenue, Whitefield.

"Officers attended and enquiries have established that a window and wall of a property were damaged in the early hours of the morning.

"No one was injured.

"An investigation is underway but officers currently believe that this was a targeted attack and there is no threat to the wider community.

"No arrests have been made."

Detective Sergeant Andrew Wright, of GMP’s Bury division, said: "I would like to start by offering some reassurance – incidents of this nature, understandably, create concerns in communities but we do believe this was a targeted attack and there is no threat to the wider community.

"Extensive enquiries are underway so members of the public should expect to see extra police officers in the area.

"Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate this kind of behaviour so we are committed to identifying those responsible and bringing them to justice.

"I would, therefore, like to use this opportunity to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious or has any other information to contact us."
