Single mum cancels first holiday abroad with son amid fury at double-jab travel rules

A single mum has been left devastated after her first holiday with her son had to be postponed due to Government vaccination rules.

Yesterday morning Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced he would be easing restrictions on double vaccinated travellers returning from amber listed countries from July 19.

They will no longer be required to isolate on their return, and the number of required PCR tests will be cut from two to one.

The move will render trips to dozens of holiday hotspots including Spain, Portugal and Greece far more affordable.

Mr Shapps is expected to announce that double vaccinated parents can take their under 18s to such countries, even though the majority won't have had the opportunity to be jabbed yet.

With vaccinations still being rolled out among people in their late teens, 20s and 30s, many younger parents will not be allowed to travel abroad.

Leah Williams had planned to go to the Canary Islands in August, before four-year-old Jackson-Lee starts school in September.

But now that trip of a lifetime looks impossible, as there is no way Leah will have both vaccinations in time.

The 22-year-old has only just been offered her first jab, and would have to wait for a minimum of eight weeks before getting her second vaccination.

Brits then have to wait for two weeks after the second shot in the arm for the vaccine to work fully.

This makes Leah's dream holiday with little Jackson-Lee almost impossible, as he starts school in September.

Leah said: "We wanted to go to Spain and go to the beach, because Jackson has never been to a really nice beach.

"We just wanted to have a fun holiday and experience going away before he started school in September.

"This was going to be our first holiday abroad.

"I've always wanted to take him away, and I don't know how long these rules will last. We've been planning this trip for around three years.

"We originally wanted to go away before but had to wait because of the pandemic."

Leah is one of many who won't be able to get their second dose until August or September and will now be missing the chance to get away after a long year during the school holidays.

Only 32 per cent of people in their 30s have been double jabbed, while only one in five of those aged 18 to 29 has full immunity.

In contrast, 96 per cent of over-60s and 90 per cent of over-50s will be able to access a vaccine passport.

Little Jackson-Lee asks every day when they are going to the beach, and mum Leah has to reply: "Not yet, soon."

She said he would be devastated when she tells him that they're going to have to postpone their holiday once again.

"I feel so down about it, it's really depressing," Leah, of Runcorn, Cheshire, said.

"It's another thing that Covid has ruined. I think the Government should do more to help young families go on holiday.

"I don't think we should need both jabs to be able to go on holiday easily.

"It penalises younger people and younger families, who haven't been able to get their vaccinations.

"We've all been locked up for the same amount of time so why should they be able to go on holiday first.

"And after school starts, we won't be able to go abroad."
