KANAZAWA -- A bunch of Ishikawa Prefecture grapes has fetched the second highest price ever, selling for 1.1 million yen, or 9,900, dollars in the first auction of this season at a wholesale market in Kanazawa, the prefectural capital, on Tuesday.
The single bunch of "Ruby Roman" grapes weighs about 700 grams, with the price per grape working out to about 32,000 yen.
Dontaku, a supermarket chain in the prefecture, made the successful bid at the auction held at the Kanazawa City Central Wholesale Market.
"We'll exhibit [the grapes] at our shop, so I want [customers] to look at this," said Munehiro Yamaguchi, 34, the president of Dontaku's operating company.
JA Zen-Noh Ishikawa, a branch of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations, started shipping Ruby Roman grapes in 2008. The sugar content is high enough at 18 degrees or more, and the sweetness spreads in the mouth.
The cooperative is expected to ship about 26,000 bunches of Ruby Roman this year.
