Singer Phoebe Bridgers reveals she had an abortion last year while on tour

Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers has been praised for opening up about her abortion last year amid the tensions in the United States over a potential law change.

The 27-year-old took to social media to announce that she had an abortion while she was on tour last October and believes "everyone deserves that kind of access" after a leaked draft opinion suggested the US Supreme Court could overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade case which legalised abortion across the whole of the country.

Bridgers wrote on Twitter : "I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour.

"I went to planned parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access."

The Grammy-nominated singer also posted a link to abortion funds for her 560,000 followers to donate.

Bridgers is currently in a relationship with Normal People actor Paul Mescal. They made their debut as a couple at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Film Gala in 2021 and went Instagram official weeks later.

Last week, the singer allegedly referred to Paul as her fiancé over the weekend as the pair partied at Coachella as rumours continued to swirl around a potential engagement.

One user replying to her Twitter post said: "I'm so proud of you for speaking up about this. It’s so important and it gets rid of the stigma around it, making others feel better about sharing their own stories, which takes bravery. And I'm so proud of the bravery with which you shared this."

Another said: "I’ve never heard a Phoebe Bridgers song but this tweet made me want to. Thank you for sharing your story. Abortions are so difficult to talk about."

A third added: "I am so proud of you for doing what was best for you. And thank you for all your support so other women have the right to an abortion."

US president Joe Biden had earlier hit out at the "radical" draft Supreme Court opinion and warned that other rights such as same-sex marriage and birth control could be at risk if the Roe v Wade ruling was overturned.

It is believed that if the court does go through with the decision, around half of the states will introduce abortion bans.

In a statement released on social media, Mr Biden said "I believe that a woman's right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned."
