Singapore Army officer dies during military exercise on Queensland coast

A 21-year-old Singaporean military officer has died in an armoured vehicle crash during an exercise along Queensland's central coast.

Singapore's Ministry for Defence confirmed Third Sergeant Chan Hiang Cheng Gavin was involved in a "vehicular incident" at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area about 6:15pm on Friday.

About 5,000 Singapore military personnel are in Australia to participate in Exercise Wallaby — a major training activity.

Third Sergeant Chan was travelling in an armoured Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle as part of the exercise when the incident happened, Singapore's Defence Ministry said.

Queensland Ambulance officers were called at 10:30pm to take the officer from the Rockhampton Airport to hospital.

He died of his injuries a short time later.

No Australian Defence Force members or vehicles were involved in the incident and it is understood all other Singapore military personnel involved were physically unharmed.

Defence Minister Marise Payne offered the condolences of the Australian Government to the officer's family and colleagues.

"Australia and Singapore have a deep and enduring defence relationship and our thoughts are with Singapore at this time," she said in a statement.

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said the death was "another painful reminder of the sacrifice that not only our own brave men and women in uniform face daily, but those of our allies and close friends".

In August, three US marines died after the aircraft they were travelling in crashed at Shoalwater Bay.

Twenty-six US personnel were on board the MV-22 Osprey, and 23 were rescued.
