Singapore Airlines ditches Canberra-Wellington routes

The first flight between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington was met with much fanfare.

Singapore Airlines has announced it will can flights between Canberra and Wellington, 18 months after the maiden flight landed amidst much fanfare.

The Singapore-Canberra-Wellington route brought Canberra Airport's first regular international flights in more than a decade, when it landed in September 2016.

However after lacklustre passenger numbers in early months, and a review of the route, the airline has removed the Wellington leg of the trip.

Canberrans will still have direct international flights with Singapore Airlines, with a route circulating between Sydney, Canberra, and Singapore.

Canberra Airport managing director Stephen Byron said he was disappointed with the decision, but was optimistic another carrier would introduce a route.

"We know now there is a proven opportunity for a service linking Canberra and New Zealand," he said.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, who lobbied hard for international flights to Canberra, said he was disappointed on Twitter.

"It's sad that Singapore Airlines' service to our sister city Wellington will now run through Melbourne," he said.

"However, we will continue to develop and value our relationship with our friends in the New Zealand capital."

The trade-off for the loss of the Wellington route is that daily flights will now operate from Canberra direct to Singapore, with a return leg stopping by Sydney.

Qatar Airways is due to shortly commence flights between Canberra and Doha, via Sydney.
