Sindhu trounces Hooi; doubles pair in last 8

PV Sindhu and the men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships while the rest of the Indians exited the tournament in Manila on Thursday.

Sindhu made short work of world No. 100 Yue Yann Jaslyn Hooi of Singapore 21-16, 21-16 and third seeded Satwik-Chirag defeated the Japanese duo of Akira Kogo and Taichi Saito 21-17, 21-15. However, K Srikanth lost 16-21, 21-17, 17-21 to Weng Hong Yang of China and Saina Nehwal faltered against Wang Zhi Yi of China 21-12, 7-21, 13-21.

The mixed doubles pair of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto lost to seventh- seeded Malaysian duo of Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jeng 18-21, 18-21.

Sindhu faced little resistance from Hooi. From 14-14 in the first game, Sindhu moved ahead without difficulty. In the second, Sindhu gained an upper hand from the eighth point. Hooi made a strong bid at 11-16 and closed the gap to 15-16, but the Indian closed the game quickly.

Satwik-Chirag will face Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh in the quarterfinals. The Malaysians defeated Dani Bawa and Jung Liang of Indonesia.
