Simulator shows where Nottingham Forest would finish if Chris Hughton had started season

Chris Hughton has overseen an upturn in fortunes since taking up the role of Nottingham Forest manager.

Four straight league defeats at the start of the Championship season led to Sabri Lamouchi being axed last month, and Hughton being appointed.

In his seven games at the helm, the new manager has picked up 12 points, with just one defeat to his name.

But how would this term have panned out if he had been in charge from the very first match? Well, according to a simulation run by Football Manager, pretty well indeed.

The campaign was simulated as if Hughton had been in place at the City Ground from the start, and has the Reds finishing third with 83 points.

In a scenario which will bring back painful memories, though, Forest then miss out on promotion in the play-offs.

The predictor has them beating Swansea City 5-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals, before losing to Watford on penalties in the final, after a 1-1 draw.

The simulator has them spending a period of time in top spot, including in the final weeks, only to drop to third right at the end.

Norwich City go up as champions, with Bournemouth runners-up, while Wycombe Wanderers, Huddersfield Town and Coventry City are relegated.

Forest’s arch-rivals Derby County finish in a lowly 17th.

With Lamouchi in charge, the club fell at the first hurdle in the Carabao Cup, being beaten by Barnsley in their first game this term.

But the simulator has them making the third round under Hughton, toppling Scunthorpe United and Shrewsbury Town, before losing to Preston North End.

Their FA Cup run is considerably shorter, however, with a 3-0 thumping away to Tottenham Hotspur at the third round stage.

The club’s simulated transfer activity is interesting, too.

Football Manager has the Reds bringing in exciting Chelsea teenager Thierno Ballo, West Bromwich Albion forward Kyle Edwards and young Arsenal attacking midfielder Emile Smith Rowe in the January window.

Tyler Blackett and Loic Mbe Soh head in the opposite direction, on loan to Swansea City and MK Dons respectively.

Lewis Grabban is predicted to once again be the club’s top scorer, with 19 goals, closely followed by Joe Lolley, on 12.
