Simple ways to save on car running costs

IF SAVING money on your motoring bills is a priority for you in 2022 then industry experts have some great advice.

The team at car and van provider Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have put together five top tips on how to minimise the cost of running and maintaining your vehicle.

Firstly, keep on top of your car’s maintenance – do not skip any servicing your car requires, as this leads to further wear and tear on your vehicle, leading to higher costs.

When you are taking your car to be repaired or serviced, use a reliable garage that can guarantee their parts are approved by the manufacturer to avoid further hassle and expense.

Secondly, how you drive can affect fuel efficiency and wear and tear on your vehicle. So drive at a steady speed to reduce acceleration, avoid harsh braking and drive in the highest gear you possibly can without overworking the engine.

Despite recent changes in the regulations to stop “loyal” customers being penalised, it is always worth shopping around for car insurance to see which provider is offering you the best value for money.

Using a mobile phone app or going online to find and pay for cheaper parking spaces is also becoming more widespread. You can choose whichever time limit you require and you can extend your booking while out and about to minimise the chances of getting a parking ticket.

If your car is your pride and joy and you like to keep it clean in the mucky weather, washing it yourself will not only save you £100-plus a year, but it will also allow you to check it for chips and scratches that could lead to corrosion.

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts boss Keith Hawes said: “Cars take a lot of looking after and, if not done correctly, unexpected bills can be incurred.

“Taking simple steps such as driving efficiently or cleaning your own car to keep an eye out for any damage can minimise the money you spend on repairing and maintaining your vehicle.”
