Simple way to find out if you can recycle your Christmas wrapping paper

Christmas may be different for many of us this year, but hopefully you'll still have some presents to open come Christmas morning.

Beautifully wrapped gifts are something we love to see under our tree, but many of us don't know what to do with the wrapping paper once we've opened our present.

Lots of us want to be more environmentally friendly and many forms of wrapping paper can now be recycled.

There's a simple test you can do to know if your paper can be recycled, known as the "scrunch test"

The scrunch test is when you scrunch your wrapping paper into a tight ball to see if it springs back or not.

If your wrapping paper stays in a tight ball it can be recycled, but if it bounces back after it is scrunched it can't be.

Most simple wrapping papers will past the scrunch test, meaning it can be recycled.

But people should also remove any sticky tape or decorations such as ribbons and bows from the wrapping paper before they recycle it as these can't be recycled.

Wrapping paper which contains foil or glitter can't be recycled and needs to go into the general waste.

To help combat waste many retailers are no longer selling glitter-covered wrapping paper, with M&S removing glitter from its entire festive range.

John Lewis and Morrisons have also gone glitter free ahead of the festive season, eliminating its use across their own brand greetings cards, crackers, plants and wrapping paper.

Primark have started giving out carrier bags that can be transformed into wrapping paper to help reduce waste over Christmas.
