Simple test dog owners should do before walking pets in hot weather

With temperatures set to rise over the Bank Holiday weekend, many people will be eager to get some fresh air and enjoy a socially distanced walk.

For those with pooches, however, it's important to take some precautions in the warmer weather so your furry friend stays happy and healthy.

Reminding pet owners of this the charity Dog's Trust has shared an important update on its website.

Most of it is common sense, but it's vital you familiarise yourself with the dos and don'ts.

Firstly, walk your dog when it's cooler; early in the morning or late evening.

Also ensure your dog has plenty of water and shade all day.

There is a simple test you can do too if you're worried it's too hot for your dog.

It's called the seven-second test and the Dog's Trust advise: "If you can't hold your hand on tarmac for seven seconds, then it's too hot for your dog's paws."

On the charity's website it reads: "Tarmac can get very hot in the sun – check it with your hand before letting your dog walk on it so they do not burn their paws.

"Try the 'seven-second test'; if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws."

Dog's Trust also warns against letting your pet get sunburnt, stating: "Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of their skin such as the tips of their ears and nose and avoid direct sunlight where you can – ask your vet for further advice if needed."

For more information about how to keep your pet safe in the sun, head to the website.
