Simple parking mistake which could land you with a £1,000 fine

Are you pretty well versed with the Highway Code? If so, you'll probably already know that there's a correct way to park at nighttime, when you're not in a marked bay.

Drivers who didn't know about this rule, should probably brush up on their knowledge as traffic wardens are currently targeting those who make a parking error, as part of a national crack down.

And those who make the mistake could find themselves in trouble with the law and facing a hefty fine, reports Leicestershire Live.

According to the Highway Code, drivers must park the same way as the as the direction of traffic at night, if they're not in a marked bay.

So that means you're free to park any which way you choose during the day - but when the sun goes down, you need to be a lot more careful.

If you ignore the rule, you could be hit with a whopping £1,000 fine, which can easily be raised to as much as £2,500 for goods vehicles or passenger vehicles over eight seats.

Parking facing the traffic on unlit roads can be extremely dangerous, according to car scrapping comparison site, scrapcarcomparison.co.uk.

The company warns that these cars would be shrouded in darkness, meaning that passers by wouldn't be able to see them clearly.

A spokesperson for the comparison site said: "Motors parked the correct way would be visible and illuminated by headlights bouncing off the rear reflectors.

"Rule 248 of the Highway Code states 'you must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space', and not many motorists are aware of this."

They added: "We've dealt with cars that have been written-off due to a passing car crashing into them as they have partly stuck out from a parking space."
