Simple explanation as unusual looking Dublin Airport bound plane flies over Ireland

An usual looking plane soared over Irish skies last week - leaving some aviation fans baffled.

Instead of the familiar designs of Ryanair and Aer Lingus, the plane sported an unfamiliar blue and gold livery.

And the flight also took an unusual route, taking off from Dublin Airport and traveling across the midlands before doing a turn over the Atlantic off the west coast.

The plane then returned to touch down at the airport in the capital.

One eagle-eyed flight fan wrote: "Hi @DublinAirport and @ AerLingus - can you shed any light on what this flight was for today?

"Livery on the plane certainly was the green, white, and shamrock."

However there was a straightforward explanation behind Friday's strange flight, as the former Aer Lingus plane now belongs to the American low-cost airline Allegiant Air.

And the plane's route can be attributed to the fact it was on a "test spin".

Irish aviation expert Michael Kelly explained on Twitter: "Taking one of the Aer Lingus Airbus A320s for a test spin just now.

"Appearances can be deceiving, as this aircraft is now in the livery of its new operator Allegiant of the USA and will be following on the delivery of another ex Aer Lingus A320 to the carrier on 25th January.
