Simple card payment hack can help you spend less on petrol and diesel

As the price of petrol continues to increase dramatically, motorists are looking for cheaper ways to fill up their cars.

Essential journeys are becoming more expensive as drivers now face paying record prices for petrol and diesel. It's one more thing Brits can expect to pay more for as the cost of living crisis hits households hard. Average petrol prices look set to hit the £2-per-litre mark, largely due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine which has caused worldwide economic disruption. While little can be done about the prices, there are ways to make savings.

By opting in to a loyalty scheme, drivers can earn "points" or rewards which then turn into money off your fuel. You can also use your loyalty card for a number of supermarkets which have petrol stations on site.

Tesco shoppers can collect Clubcard points on fuel at all Tesco petrol stations and all Esso petrol stations with a Tesco Express on site. When paying for your fuel, just present your paper or digital voucher to the cashier. To collect Clubcard points you just need to tap your Clubcard at the Checkout or on the "PayatPump" terminal. Drivers will collect one point for every £3 of fuel.

Similarly, Sainsbury's shoppers can collect Nectar points when purchasing fuel at its pumping stations. Motorists will get one point for every litre of petrol or diesel they buy. To use Nectar points to get a discount on fuel, you must fill up with a minimum of 10 litres. You can then swap 300 Nectar points to get 5p off each litre you purchase.

Shell offers a loyalty card whereby customers earn a "visit" each time they spend £10 or more on fuel. Once you reach 10 visits you get a money off fuel reward.

Morrisons, too, has a reward scheme and people can get 10 "Morrisons More" points per litre. A £5 voucher is given upon collection of 5000 points.

BP customers can obtain a BPme card, which sees points earned in a similar way. Customers can redeem the points as money off fuel or in-store purchases.

By using such cards each time you fill up, you can save money off future petrol or diesel purchases.
