Simple 20p trick can dramatically cut the amount you spend on fuel

There are a number of ways drivers can reduce the amount they are spending on fuel as costs continue to remain high - everything from turning air conditioning off and keeping windows closed to reducing the number of short trips you take and reducing excess weight in the car. Advice has been issued as petrol and diesel prices have been hovering around £2 a litre for weeks.

Now one expert has revealed the simple 20p trick that can cut the amount you spend on fuel. According to Kwik Fit, using underinflated tyres can add 20% to a car’s fuel consumption.

Tyres typically lose air naturally, at a rate of up to two PSI (pounds per square inch) every month. Because of this, drivers are urged to check their tyre pressure regularly, as it can help preserve fuel. Ensuring tyres are topped up is essential for safety as well as fuel efficiency.

If your tyres are even slightly distorted due to incorrect tyre pressure, drivers will be using more fuel to keep their cars running smoothly. This is because of the added friction while driving that comes from a misshapen tyre.

Drivers can check their tyre treads with a 20p coin, the Express reports. Current UK law states that tyre tread on cars must be a minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around its entire circumference.

Drivers should place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then the tread is above the legal limit, says the Mirror.

If the outer band of the coin is visible, then the tyres may be unsafe and should be checked immediately by a qualified tyre professional. When taking the test, drivers need to remember to check at least three locations around each tyre.

Motorists are urged to check their tyres at least once a month.
